ATHENS GROUP RIDES
The Athens Group Ride is a community group that meets for road rides during the week (Mar-Oct) and on Saturdays (year round). In March, weeknight rides meet at 5:45 and roll at 6:00. Starting in April, they start at 6:00 and roll at 6:15. You can find information on instagram (@athensgroupride) or join the WhatsApp for updates (https://chat.whatsapp.com/KzDkDpjtMXA5JW2TgBcG1G). These rides are for cyclists who are comfortable riding in a group on open roads. They are DROP rides, which means they will not wait if you are struggling with the pace. Most have “attack zones” that are race sections. There is a regrouping after each of these. If you have a mechanical, say (yell) something. The group will likely wait.
Athens Rides observe the “window open rule.” This means there is a 15 minute window from the meeting time to the start time of the ride. If you see a post that says 9am window open, the group will meet at 9am and leave at 9:15.
If you have any questions, text Carlie Cooper (7066044889). She is an admin in the WhatsApp and can provide clarifications about rides.
Monday
Meet Location: Choco Pronto Ride Level: Hard (19-21 MPH) Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/32272311 Notes: This has not been a well attended ride the past year or so. When it happens, it is fast. Expect a single file pace line and a sprint in winterville (at the town sign at the end of Parkview Rd).
Tuesday
ROAD Meet Location: The Silos (3750 Old Jefferson Rd, Athens, GA 30607) Ride Level: Hard (18-20 MPH) Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42500135 Notes: This ride has 3 attack zones (marked on the route, but skip the 3rd one. So 1, 2, and 4 are observed). They will regroup at the end of each. In between the attack zones, ride double-file and an endurance pace (19-21 mph).
MTB Meet Location: The Hub Ride Level: All Welcome, No Drop Route: Varies Notes: This is the local MTB ride that explores all of the trails around the Athens Area. These trails are rought cut and not groomed. Be prepared to have creek crossing, hike a bikes, and bushwacking. Many locals take part in this ride and will gladly help out with anything.
Wednesday
Meet Location: The Silos (3750 Old Jefferson Rd, Athens, GA 30607) Ride Level: Hard, Race Pace (20+ MPH) Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/32272489 Notes: This ride is referred to as Wednesday Worlds because it is treated as a race pace training ride. Expect single-file pace line and attacks from riders during the ride. The ride ends with a sprint at the crosswalk at the end of Nowhere Rd. This is a very hard ride.
Thursday
Meet Location: The Hub Ride Level: Medium, Social (17-19 MPH) Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/32272542 Notes: This is the entry level Athens Group Ride. Expect a double-file, social paced roll out of town. The attack zone starts when you turn left on to Arnoldville Rd. The group will go single-file and will begin this race section. It is 5 miles and ends at the Winterville Town sign. The ride regroups at the Church at the end of the road and will continue a social pace into town. The group stops at Ted’s Most Best each week for refreshments after the ride.
Saturday (Mar-Nov)
Single File Saturday (8am start in the summer, changes to 9 in spring and fall)
Meet Location: The Hub Ride Level: Medium Hard-Race Pace (19-22MPH) Route: Varies, check the WhatsApp or Winter Bike League Notes: This ride can vary in speed. Generally, you can expect a moderate pace roll out of town in a double-file rotation. At somepoint the group will transition to a sing file rotation in which riders pull at a fast pace for a few minutes. The expectation is that you pull smooth- push on the flats and downhills, and ease up on a bit on the hills. This keeps the group moving fast.
Meet Location: The Hub Ride Level: Endurance (18-22 MPH) Route: Varies, check the WhatsApp or Winter Bike League Notes: These rides are organized by Winter Bike League. They range from 60-130 miles). Riders should feel comfortable riding long distances and close to other riders. The ride is a double-file rotation unless otherwise indicated as an intermediate sprint or attack zone. The December rides are endurance pace. In January, they add “attack zones” and “intermediate sprins” that are race sections. There is a point system in which you accumulate points earned in these sections and compete for overall placing through the series. You can earn cash and prizes in these sections each week. Riders are scored in Pro (cat 1 or 2 road racers), Non-Pro (over 40 and under 18), and Women categories.
