A cramped but fun ride up to Bristol jamming to some sweet tunes. It was even a real road trip when the Semi Charmed Life was played via computer. It was beautiful.Patrick Lavin, lining up for the crit.
Upon arrival to the Knights Inn, Kira and Emily discovered that although Bristol had melted the snow for the Athenians, the temperatures were not quite shorts weather. A quick trip to Subway for some footlongs and then Walmart for some tennis-ball colored jackets and sweatpants (and, of course, nailpolish) had the team back on the road, back to the motel to schmooz with Tech for a bit before bed.
Early morning Saturday for the time trials - of course the website had messed up every single pre-registration, so after a bit of waiting, a start list was created. A 5.6mi ride out to the start led the racers back down the hill for some fast ego-boosting averages. "It was fun since I averaged 23.1mph, but I also felt like I was going to puke at the end." [Anna]. I guess it was a job well done by the team since they finished with some sweet placements.
It was then back to the motel to drop off the cold weather gear which was no longer needed for the 70°F temperatures, and to the heart of Bristol for a lovely lunch with the Floridians. Although there was much confusion about which day it was since "Sunday is crit day!" everyone was
able to figure it out enough to get racing. Anna was most surprised when she looked out the window of the car after parking to see her Dad standing outside! At least he was there to get some great shots and see his daughter get another win in the crit. Despite some casualties during the races, the Dawgs made it out safely on top with some more good efforts and good placements - Kira, Emily, and Patrick all competed in fast fields with top 10/20 finishes.
It would seem that Tennessee likes to get up early since the Tennessee sleepers had 8:30AM start times the next morning. The dynamic duo likely spent the night in Virginia in the same room - there was much confusion all weekend about which state they were actually in. Although Kira and Emily had to get up early and race twice as long, they had a muscle-milk powered cheering squad in the freshies Patrick and Anna. All team members concluded that the road race course was "awesome" and "the most fun." "There were a lot of great places to attack, but also not too difficult. You could even attack downhills with the cornering! It was pretty!"
The trip concluded with a drive back, stop at Subway for some Sub Clubs, and some stops for pee breaks. Anna apologizes for her gallon water consumption. A beautiful adventure to Bristol with some great racing and great people. Looking forward to next year!
